These wall-panels are carved in elm. I've attempted to follow the brush-strokes with a chisel, illuminating by moonlight, the textures of the earth and rhythms of the night.

Logs this size yield material big enough for stool seats or boxes. Air-drying will take about 3 years. Removing big-butts piece-by-piece this way is a resourceful means of sourcing timber from an unusual lie. Heavy vehicles are not required.

Cleft Oak Bench

This riven oak bench will be shown in October with the Scottish Furniture Makers' Anniversary Exhibition at the Edinburgh Dovecot Gallery. It uses timber cleft along growth lines for a durable seat and legs, with curves both subtle and unusual.

Sawn Ark

With wedges removed, this chest can be taken apart and moved when necessary by one person. I was able to deliver it to the Tenby National Trust Merchants House in Wales using the hatch-back! It replicates a large Medieval ark for storing grain or flour.

Riven Ark

Meal chest or Arks were once used to store grain for bread making etc. The curved lid lifts off and could be turned upside down on a table-surface for kneading dough.

The simplicity and refinement is replicated from an original from the V&A. Made with oak cleft by wedge-and-mallet, this ark is now on public display at Tretower Court in South Wales.

Riven Ark

The Riven Ark as a complicated 'flat-pack' before assembly with pegs and wedges. Amazingly this design remain virtually unchanged for about 300 years, making originals difficult to date.

Scottish Parliament display

Shown at the Scottish Parliament before touring highland venues, this re-creation of a Pictish Throne was inspired by stone carvings dating back 1000 years. The chair is the first product of a partnership between the Museum of Scotland and Glenmorangie, celebrating the ancient Scottish crafts as new museum objects.

100%design Earls Court 2009

My first stand at 100%design had furniture and two carved wall panels. A lot of interest was shown for seating using riven wood. With obvious differences to the higher production companies, this design is aimed at the customer who wants a unique piece/or pieces that could be commissioned or selected from stock.
Two cleft benches display the individuality of the products in shape and feel of wood both sealed and left raw from hand-tool finish.

A coloured table exhibited has been selected for 2010 trends.
